Khaleda will be acquitted if court remains neutral: Moudud

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Moudud Ahmed has alleged that the graft cases are being run against party chairperson Khaleda Zia out of political vengeance.
Addressing a discussion meeting on Friday, Moudud, also a former law minister, said his leader would be acquitted if the court remains neutral in its judgement.
A civic platform called ‘Democratic Council’ organised the discussion on democracy and the spirit of the country’s liberation war of 1971 at the National Press Club.
The BNP leader said his party wants a solution to political crises through discussion. “A level playing field should be ensured for all from right now to pave the way for holding a fair election. Ensuring a level playing field just a month or three before the election is not enough.”
Calling on the Bangladesh Awami League (AL) government to sit for talks to work out a type of poll-time government now, Moudud said the constitution is for the people. “The constitution could be changed if a consensus is reached [among all the political parties].”
He alleged that the government is afraid of BNP. “And that’s why it doesn’t allow BNP holding rallies and processions.”
In a separate programme, BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman said the BNP will employ its own strategy if the government wants to forcibly bring BNP to the election.
